INTRODUCTION:

Environmental science with its multidisciplinary nature and holistic approach focuses on conservation and management aspects which help for survival of life on earth by understanding and tackling various problems that deteriorate the quality of the environment. Understanding of Environmental Science is becoming ever more necessary for every person and it is responsibility of all to protect and restore the quality of our environment by using scientific knowledge.

Scope and Importance:

Scope of Enviornmental Science is broad based and it encompasses a large number of area and aspects as follows
Natural Resourses: conservation and management Natural resources are the life supportive for the human society, so it is very important to conserve,manage and use them judicially for the benefit of all.
Ecology and Biodiversity: India is one of the twelve mega diversity country in the world and has two hot spot of biodiversity namely Western Ghats and Eastern Himalayas which exhibits high species richness and endemism.
Environmental pollution and control: In the era of highly developing modern society the problem of deterioration of air water and land are at alarming stage as threat to human survival. Global environmental problems like climate change, global warming, ozone layer depletion, acid rain etc. are vulnerable for the survival of life on earth.
Social issues in relation to development and environment: Evergrowing population is root cause of all environmental and social problems. Poverty, malnutrition,illiteracy, poor health and sanitation and gender inequality are the main areas that need to be focused to achieve the aims of sustainable development in the society.
Environmental awareness and education: Following the Supreme Court directives environmental education has been made compulsory in our country right from the school stage to college/university level in order to aware the people about the status of our environment.
Environmental legislation: India is first country to have provision for protection and conservation of environment in its constitution. Hundreds of acts, rules and amendments are being made all over the world in order to maintain and restore the wholesomeness of the natural resources.
Energy crises:Demand for easily available, accessible, cheap, nonpolluting and high energy efficient renewable energy technologies are increasing day by day.

-Modern instruments for accurate analysis like: UV visible spectrophotometer, Flame Photometer, High Volume Air Sampler, COD digester and digital titrator, Sound level meters, Sunshine recorder, GPS, Bomb calorimeter and on field air and water sampling equipment.
Separate classrooms for B.Sc and M.Sc with electronic teaching aid like LCD projector and Over Head Projector.

ADMISSION CRITERIA:

I} B.Sc. Environmental Science Department of Environmental Science initiated the B.Sc. course in the academic year 2005-06. It is a three years programme based on semester system of evaluation as per the University of Pune.

1. 1. To secure admission to F.Y.B.Sc. Environmental Science, a student must have a science stream with Biology at 10 + 2 level.
2. Those students who will take admission for F.Y.B.Sc. Environmental Science must have a combination of three (Chemistry/Zoology/Botany) of the remaining subjects.>
3. There should be at least 50% marks at H.S.C. level for open category students and at least 45% marks for the reserved category students.
4. Selection of the students will be based on the Merit.
5. Total number of seats available is 60 and norms as set up by University/Government will be followed to accommodate students from reserved categories and other universities.
6. 6. Copies of relevant documents including attested photocopies of caste certificate and caste validity certificate should accompany the application form, failing of which the student will be treated as open category student

Examination: Examination will be conducted according to the norms set up by the University of Pune. Semester pattern will be followed for the evaluation of B. Sc. Environmental Science students.
Fee Structure: Fees for the entire year will have to be paid at time of admission as per the details notified from time to time by the University of Pune.
II} M.Sc. Environmental Science Department of Environmental Science initiated the M.Sc. course in the academic year 2007-08. It is a two year programme based on semester system of evaluation as per the University of Pune.

1. To secure admission to M. Sc. Environmental Science, a student must have passed B. Sc. Degree
2. There should be at least 60% marks at B.Sc. level for open category students and at least 55% marks for the reserved category students.
3. Selection of the students will be purely based on the merit.
4. Total number of seats available is 24 and norms as set up by University/Government will be followed to accommodate students from reserved categories and other universities.
5. Copies of relevant documents including attested photocopies of caste certificate and caste validity certificate should accompany the application form, failing of which the student will be treated as open category student

Examination: Examination will be conducted according to the norms set up by the University of Pune. There will be semester pattern for evaluation of M. Sc. Environmental Science students.

Students having master’s degree in Environmental Science can be placed as Research Assistant, Environmental Scientist and Research Fellow. There are various companies and consultancies outside India specialized in hazardous waste management, water recourse management, Waste Water Treatment, Environmental Pollution Control and Urban Planning environmental experts find various jobs in these companies.

PLACEMENT: The Department of Environmental Science has an active placement cell with a view to provide better opportunities to the students in various industries, consultancies, governmental and non governmental organisations, teaching and the research projects run by various institutes all over India. In connection with it the department has also received good response from the various organisations.
The department encourages its students to undertake research activities in a highly conducive and encouraging atmosphere. Final year students of M.Sc. course undertake a dissertation project which helps them to develop a futuristic research mind.
