Up-gradation of services is on cards in all educational institutions. It is
further
accelerated by the NAAC evaluation. In case of our college, one area
in which the necessity of a lot of improvement was pointed out by
the NAAC and was obviously felt by many, has been the services of
the B.J. Wadia Library. The DES and the college have taken the NAAC
remarks seriously and have launched the campaign to computerize the
B.J. Wadia Library. The necessary software has been purchased and
contract signed to prepare a database.
Preparation of a database of nearly 2,00,000 books has been an arduous
task, but finally it is done and that too with all the entries double
checked. However, this database would have been useless unless these
books had been physically verified, something which was not done in
the last 22 years.
This enormous task of physical stock taking was started on November
15, 2006 by a team of about 25 people, consisting of some past students
of B.Lib. course, some people coming regularly to the college as junior
examiners and some students of the college working in Earn-and-learn,
and of course, the library staff. The team worked relentlessly through
many difficulties. Dust was everywhere. Sometimes there would be no
lights. The space between bookshelves was very cramped. All this could
not dampen the moral of the team and nearly one and half months after
they started, the team completed physical verification, stamping and
noting the accession number of 1,55,806 books on December 28,2006.
