The cultural capital of Maharashtra is one way to describe this sparkling city of Pune apart from calling it the Oxford of the east. Pune also the home of the legendary heroes of freedom struggle has emerged as the educational and industrial hub and most happening city of India.
Fergusson College is located in the heart of Pune city on an area of 65 acres that is scenic and serene. It is surrounded by several academic institutes, in its immediate vicinity. The Fergusson College road has a large density of restaurants, hotels and recreational centers, which are a great convenience to the students, faculty and parents.
Beautiful campus:The vast campus is dotted with beautiful trees and is flanked by the famous ‘Fergusson hill’ to its west, also popularly called the ‘Hanuman hill’. The college ground is set in sylvan surroundings and the old bungalows and college buildings, built in the Gothic style, are well spread out, with the hostels and canteen occupying suitable locations. The botanical garden with its greenery and flowering plants, near the entrance gates of the college, are the lungs of the campus.
Monumental buildings The college has buildings, which can be described as historical monuments, merging into the very identity of the college. Outstanding among these are the Main Building (1892), the N. M. Wadia Amphitheatre (1912) and the Bai Jerbai Wadia Library (1929). These monuments continue to inspire our students, to contribute and to add, to the glorious history of our college.
Botanical Garden:The college has a lovely backdrop of the Fergusson hill, on its western flanks, also known as the ‘Hanuman Tekdi’. The 100-year-old Botanical Garden, extending over more than 2 acres, contains a wide variety of plants of botanical significance, large number of rare and endangered species and plants having medicinal applications. It is one of the richest gardens in this part of the country
Academic ambience:Many institutes of the DES, such as the Institute of Management and Development Research (IMDR), the Technical Institute of Pune (TIP), the Jagannath Rathi Vocational Guidance and Training Institute (JRVGTI), Law College and RESOLVE, which are all situated on the Fergusson college campus, came into being, through the efforts of the college faculty and its management. These institutes add to the academic ambience of the college.
Separate buildings for science departments:Most of the science departments as well as 2 arts departments (Economics and Psychology) have their own separate buildings, with well-equipped laboratories and spacious classrooms. The Chemistry and Physics departments, by themselves, are equal in size or larger than, some single faculty colleges in the university.
Science Museums:The Botany, Geology, Physics and Zoology departments have their own museums for which special space has been provided by the college. These are storehouses of rare exhibits, which are very great assets for understanding the developments in that subject. Few institutes can boast of such museums.
Flexible and wide range of academic programmes: The college has been able, to provide over the years, a very wide range of academic programs and subject combinations to its students.
Outstanding academic achievements:The college has consistently excellent academic track records over its entire history. This attracts many outstanding students from all over the country and even from abroad to the Fergusson College. It is, therefore, not surprising, that our students invariably figure in the merit list of Arts and Science of the university of Pune.
International and national linkages:Academic and research collaborations at the national level, have been established by most of the departments, while the German, French and Physics departments have collaborations internationally.
A college preferred by foreign students:It is the college, most preferred by the foreign students, for graduate and post-graduate studies in the Arts and Sciences. Students are mainly from Asia and Africa, with the bulk from Middle East countries. At any given time, there are more 300 foreign students studying in our college.
Staff Welfare:The Employees’ Credit Cooperative Society was formed to serve as an easy access to our employees, for their financial needs. There is also, an extension counter of the Central bank of India on the campus, for all employees. A limited number of residential quarters, are provided for some teaching and non-teaching staff.
Ex-Fergussonians’ Association (EFA) Home/ Firodia Niketan: EFA is the alumni association of the Fergusson College, which has been in existence for the past 61 years. The Firodia Niketan situated on the college campus, has an office, meeting / seminar halls and guest rooms for the use of the Fergussonians.
